Important: FFMI is an estimate, not a diagnosis or a test of whether someone is natural. Body-fat measurement error can move the result enough to change a reference band.

How to Use the FFMI Calculator

The calculator needs three measurements and returns four related values. Keep the source of each measurement with the result so you can reproduce it later.

1. Enter height and weight

Choose metric or imperial units, then enter measured height and current body weight. The calculator converts imperial values internally.

2. Add body fat percentage

Use a DEXA result, a consistent BIA trend, skinfold estimate or circumference method. Do not mix methods when tracking change.

3. Read both indices

Standard FFMI is the direct index. Normalized FFMI applies a height adjustment around 1.8 meters for easier comparisons.

FFMI Formula and Normalized FFMI

Fat-Free Mass Index separates fat-free tissue from fat mass before adjusting the result for height. It therefore answers a different question from BMI, which uses total body weight.

Standard FFMI formula

First calculate fat-free mass as body weight multiplied by one minus body-fat percentage. Divide fat-free mass in kilograms by height in meters squared.

FFMI = weight × (1 − body fat % / 100) ÷ height²

Height-normalized FFMI

A commonly used adjustment adds 6.1 times the difference between 1.8 meters and the person's height. At exactly 1.8 meters, standard and normalized FFMI are identical.

Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters)

Published population values differ by sex, age, ethnicity, measurement method and sample. The broad bands below are orientation points for adults, not universal health or performance standards.

A high number does not prove drug use, and a low number does not diagnose malnutrition. The frequently repeated normalized FFMI 25 threshold came from a small 1995 study of male athletes and should not be treated as a universal biological ceiling.

What FFMI Tells You

FFMI describes estimated fat-free mass relative to height. It can add useful context when BMI labels a muscular person as overweight, but it is not a complete health or training score.

  • Relative lean size: The index compares the amount of fat-free tissue with height rather than comparing total weight alone.
  • Trend tracking: Repeated estimates can help show whether a weight change may involve fat-free mass when measurement conditions stay similar.
  • BMI context: BMI and FFMI can be viewed together because one uses total mass and the other uses estimated fat-free mass.
  • Not muscle alone: Fat-free mass includes water, bone, organs and connective tissue as well as skeletal muscle.

Accuracy and Limitations

The equation is simple, but the input quality and choice of reference population determine how useful the output is.

  • Body-fat error: A few percentage points of body-fat error can noticeably change fat-free mass and FFMI.
  • Hydration and glycogen: DEXA and BIA estimates can shift with hydration, food, exercise and glycogen status.
  • Reference differences: Age, sex, ethnicity and training background affect population distributions, so one chart cannot fit everyone.
  • No diagnosis: Use a qualified clinician or dietitian for concerns about low muscle mass, nutrition, growth, illness or rapid body-composition change.
